Loving Mother Earth

In an effort to honor Earth Day today the boys each planted a fruit plant. Monkey: strawberries. Bogie: tomato. We talked about recycling, living "green," and why it's important to take care of God's creation; our earth.

I'm not really the green thumb in the Dunbar home, more like the 'black' thumb actually, but it was a fun adventure for all of us. (New camera, lots of dirt, little shovels, little hands and a solo mama don't mix.) The boys had a good time and I'm glad to have done my part to instill in them a virtue of taking care of our Mother Earth.

Bogie licking the watering can, I couldn't move fast enough.
Scooping up the organic potting mix.

Teamwork.

Our final products put out in their new spot with full sun.
Jack the ladybug flew onto Monkey.

Do you know why ladybugs are important to our gardens?

Ladybugs are important because they eat the aphids. Aphids are bad, because they eat our leaves and flowers that eventually become the fruit or vegetables that we are trying to grow. That is why you can buy ladybugs, if you don't have enough of them in your own garden, you can bring them to your home and organically get rid of the nasty bugs. That is the scientific reasons ~ my own personal reasons, is they just make our gardens more cheerful to see them flying around and cute ;) Good job boys, you make me proud (your Moma too!)

What a great idea! I don't know why ladybugs are important, but I know that finding one is always the highlight of Lily's day :)

I love that you did that with your boys! I really need to plant a little garden here soon. Jeff is still working on tearing things out in the back, so maybe in another week or so. My mom always had a garden and I remember as a kid and still now it is so fun eating things that we grow ourselves.

Looks like fun! We are actually getting ready to plant a vegetable garden ourselves. Did you make it to Water District up here by me for Earth Day? They were giving away tons of free "green" stuff. I even got a gallon of recycled paint. Crazy, huh?

So, we definitely need to reschedule our playdate. With MAP ending this week, we should have more time on our hands. Let me know what works for you!
